MLB: Philly-Rookie: Long break after hand break

J.P. Crawford has broken his left hand and is expected to be out for four to six weeks. The Philadelphia Phillies rookie infielder was hit by a pitch on Tuesday.

In the fourth inning of the 7-6 home defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals, Crawford took a hit-by-pitch from card starter Luke Weaver. Immediately afterwards, supervisors examined him briefly on the field, then he went to first base and initially remained in the game as a base runner. Crawford was only replaced at the beginning of the fifth inning.

“This is really hard,” said Phillies manager Gabe Kapler. “I sympathize with him as a man. And I sympathize with him as a gambler.”

Maikel took over Franco on third base for Crawford, where he will probably start again in Crawford’s absence. Franco had been transferred to the bench due to performance fluctuations as rookie Scott Kingery took over the shortstop and Crawford moved up to third base.

This is Crawford’s second trip to the Disabled List this season. Already at the end of April he injured his forearm and did not return until June 6th.
