MLB: 10.000: Mega-anniversary for the Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals won 4-0 against the Cleveland Indians on Monday, reaching a special milestone: their 10,000th victory in the National League.

The Cardinals are one of only eight teams in the MLB with more than 10,000 victories. The total number of cardinals is 10,776, but the first 776 come from her time in the American Association under the name St. Louis Browns or St. Louis Brown Stockings in the years 1882 to 1891. 1892 the franchise became part of the National League.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher John Gant became the match winner on Monday in his home Busch Stadium, right-hander currently standing in for injured Michael Wacha and only made one hit in his seven shutout innings (5 BB, 4 SO).

“Without Wacha, I have big shoes to fill,” said Gant after his longest start in his career to date. “And I’ll do my best to keep filling it.”

Gant helped to stop an Indians team that had previously clinched seven victories in a row. “He took our balance,” said Indian manager Terry Francona about Gant: “I had the feeling that he just really pitched. He didn’t overwhelm us with his stuff, but we were lucky that the third base was in the way at Yan Gomes’ ground ball, otherwise we wouldn’t have made a hit against him,” Francona described a happy single that broke off Gants No-Hitter.
