NBA: All information about the Free Agency 2018

LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Paul George can become free agents next summer. SPOX has summarized all information about the Free Agency 2018: Who is Restrictred Free Agent? Who is Unrestricted? Which team options, which player options are anchored in the contracts? In addition, we explain the most important terms, data and rules around the Free Agency at a glance.

LeBron is of course the most important domino in the complete free agent structure. The mega star of the Cavs is unlikely to exercise his option for the coming season and seek a new contract. Where this will be is completely open.

Even staying with the Cavaliers is not a utopia. Possible candidates for departure would be the Los Angeles Lakers, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Houston Rockets or possibly the Boston Celtics. Here is a detailed article about the upcoming Free Agency des Kings.

Similar to James, the two-time finals MVP Durant will certainly drop out of his contract. However, it can be assumed that KD will sign again in the Bay Area. The question is probably only how much money Durant will collect in the future and how many years the new working paper will run.

However: Durant left a small back door open and finally explained that anything was possible. However, it would be a real shock if KD didn’t sign with Golden State.

The way for PG-13 seemed actually sketched out. The wingman was not expected to withdraw his option and sign with his favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers, on July 1.

Recently, however, rumors arose that George could also imagine staying in Oklahoma City. PG-13 praised the organization all year round, which is a good sign for the Thunder. According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, it is possible that George will sign a new but short contract (1+1) and then be a free agent again next year.

Chris Paul wants to stay in Houston, the Point Guard made that clear again and again and the responsible persons of the Houston Rockets assert this again and again. The problem is the length and volume of the 33-year-old’s last major contract.

When CP3 forced a departure from the Clippers last year, there seemed to be an agreement under the table that Houston would offer the Point Guard a maximum contract this summer. This would be 5 years and 205 million dollars – last year Paul would collect almost 47 million dollars at 38 years.

The Rockets apparently want to avoid that and according to Chris Broussard (ESPN) there were some inconsistencies. Nevertheless, it should be assumed that both parties will agree.

Boogie is still suffering from the Achilles tendon rupture that the center closed at the end of January. Its market value is correspondingly difficult to determine. Does a team offer the Big a long-term maximum contract? It’s hard to imagine.

The Pelicans want to keep cousins, they have stressed this several times. But they would slip deeply into the luxury tax, for a small franchise like New Orleans this is not an easy decision. However, the Pelicans continue to be the favourites for the centres, but the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers are also included.

The Free Agency is about signing players whose contracts have expired for the NBA teams. These can be players who have previously played in their own team or players who have previously been under contract to another franchise. These Free Agents are divided into two categories: Restricted and Unrestricted.

Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) becomes a player when his contract expires and there are no further options in his contract. He can then decide freely about his new team.

If a player is Restricted Free Agent (RFA), his current team can match any offer from another team, i.e. keep up with the offer of the competition. In this case, the player must stay with his previous team. This applies in particular to players selected in the first round of the NBA draft. These players will receive RFA at the end of their four-year rookie contract if their respective teams make them a so-called qualifying offer.

The Qualifying Offer is a contract offer that a team can make to its own player by 29 June at the latest to make him a Restricted Free Agent. If the team does not do this, the player automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent. A qualifying offer usually includes a new one-year contract with predetermined remuneration.

If a team wants to sign a Restricted Free Agent of another team, it must submit an offer sheet to the player. The previous team now has seven days to match the offer.

Players whose four-year rookie contract expires can also be offered a so-called maximum qualifying offer by their current team. This includes a five-year contract for the maximum salary with an additional eight percent salary increase per year.

If such an offer is made to a player, other teams can only offer him working papers with a guaranteed term of at least three years (without options).

A team can extend the contract with a free agent and then trade it to another team within 48 hours. If no trade is concluded within this period, the contract is invalid. A sign-and-trade contract must be at least three years long. Bird rights may not be transferred. A sign-and-trade deal makes sense if it is already clear that the player does not want to stay with his team. This way the team receives at least a “compensation” in the form of players or draft picks. The host team can also make room under the salary cap.

Player Option: If a contract includes a player option, the player has the possibility to extend his contract for another season. If the player does not drag this option, he becomes Unrestricted Free Agent.

Team Option: The same applies to the Team Option. If this option is included in the contract, a team has the option of extending a player’s contract for another season. If the team does not remove the option, the player becomes Unrestricted Free Agent.
