MLB: Reds plan 2019 with budget increase
The Cincinnati Reds plan to increase their payroll for 2019. This was announced by Dick Williams, President of Baseball Operations, on Tuesday.
“We believe we are developing a good player core to invest around,” Williams told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “For the first time in years, I firmly believe we will have an increased payroll.”
This season, the Reds will pay their players around $111 million – the seventh-lowest payroll of the MLB 2018.
The Reds have lost 43 of their first 65 games this season and separated from manager Bryan Price early in the season. In June, however, they were 18-8 and will be represented by three players – Joey Votto, Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez – at the All-Star Game in Washington, DC.
“I’m not talking about one or two percent,” Williams told the newspaper: “But it’s too early to say exactly. Much will depend on how we play the rest of the year, what the support of the fans will be and what our strategic decisions will be regarding our investments in this off-season”.
