MLB: Thor drops out with childhood illness for the time being

The New York Mets have put pitcher Noah Syndergaard on the Disabled List. The right-handed person suffers from hand-foot-mouth disease, a disease that usually only occurs in children.

Hand-foot-mouth disease causes symptoms such as fever, a swollen throat or skin rash. The disease does not last long and Syndergaard should recover quickly. The Mets think he’ll only miss one launch.

However, it is very rare that adults are affected by the disease. The Mayo Clinic writes about this on its website: “There is no special treatment for handfoot-mouth disease. However, washing your hands regularly and avoiding physical contact with people who are infected should reduce your child’s risk of infection.”

Syndergaard probably got infected during a children’s training camp he had held during the All-Star break.

Syndergaard is 6-1 this season with a 2.89 ERA and 83 strikeouts over 74 2/3 innings. He was already on the DL with a finger injury and is often mentioned in trade rumours, although actually nobody assumes that the Mets will actually part with the 25-year-old.
