MLB: After infection: Cleveland-Star may go home

Leonys Martin will leave the hospital on Sunday after his life-threatening bacterial infection. This was announced by the Cleveland Indians.

Chris Antonetti, President of Baseball Operations for the Indians, announced the good news on Sunday before the game against the Baltimore Orioles. At the same time, it is not foreseeable when Martin will be able to return to the field.

“It’s more than just a relief, especially when you think about what it looked like a week ago,” Antonetti told reporters. “I think it’s important to remember that we don’t know much. We’re in uncharted territory. There is no precedent to look back on when we ask ourselves what it will be like when he starts playing sport again. Rather, we must continue to look from day to day.”

From the Indians’ point of view, the priority now is to help Martin to become fully healthy again and to regain his strength.

Martin fell ill overnight on August 7th and was taken to the Cleveland Clinic, where it was discovered that an unspecified bacterium had entered his bloodstream. It produced toxins and attacked his internal organs. On Wednesday Martin had been discharged from the intensive care unit and has continued to recover in the last few days.
