MLB: Russell fails with hand injury

The Chicago Cubs have put Shortstop Addison Russell on the Disabled List. At the same time, they activated newcomer Daniel Murphy, who just the day before moved from Washington Nationals to Windy City by trade.

Russell’s been having shoulder, leg and hand problems for a while. But a sprained knuckle on his left hand probably gave him the rest.

“Being a football player, I tend to bite my teeth,” Russell said Wednesday. “I want to be on the field. That’s where I belong. I’m used to playing in pain, but if it lasts longer than expected, I pay more attention to it.”

While Russell continued to act defensively, his offensive production has recently been severely affected. Its OPS since the beginning of June is only .664.

Murphy in turn jumped directly as lead-off hitter against the Detroit Tigers (8:2 Chicago) and was 2-5 (R, RBI). He played second base while Javier Baez gave the shortstop.

“I’ll come in here and fight like my hair’s on fire,” Murphy said when he arrived at the new team.
