MLB: Alt-Star back at his old place of work

The Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 4:3 in front of their home crowd on Thursday. But the story of the day was the return of Matt Holliday, who played for the Rockies for the first time in ten years.

In the second inning the time had come in Coors Field: Holliday came to the pitch for the first time and to warm applause. He hit position five and played left field. He hit a groundout and finally remained without a hit (0-3), but in the fifth inning he hit a ball hard, which was finally caught, although Holliday had already seen him outside.

“The way I see it, there was suddenly a tornado blowing in from Left Field,” Holliday said with a laugh: “I hit the ball well.”

The Rockies finally won the game in a dramatic way: They were 2-3 down in the ninth inning before Ian Desmond came to the pitch. And he finally hit a 2-run-walk-off-homerun with two outs and let the stadium rejoice.

For Holliday, however, it was the first start for the Rockies since 2008, when the outfielder first failed to find a team and finally signed a minor league deal with Colorado. Until Wednesday he played for Triple-A Albuquerque.
