MLB: 19-year-old breaks legend’s record

Juan Soto continues making history. The Washington Nationals rookie outfielder played a major role in the doubleheader sweep against Philadelphia Phillies and even broke a record for Ken Griffey Jr. with two home runs.

In the first rack (3-1) Soto was 2-4 and caused a sensation with a highlight catch in the foul territory. In the second game in Philly (7:6), Soto (3-4, 4 RBI, BB) beat two home runs, including the tenth inning final.

The 19-year-old was the first teenager to play three multi-homerun games. And Soto is now on 18 home runs as a teenager – one more than Ken Griffey Jr. at the time. No teenie ever made long balls in the MLB.

“He’s very talented,” said manager Dave Martinez: “I’ve never seen a 19-year-old who swings and is as patient on the record as he is. He’s really focused on beating strikes. He’s working his way up to the Count. He’s really good. He’s only 19, but he plays the game like he’s been in the league a long time.”

The Nationals have thus won their last four games in a row and have also made their second sweep in doubleheaders in the past four days. Nevertheless, they are still beaten in the playoff races in both the National League East (6.5 games back) and in the wildcard (8 games).
