MLB: Boston reaches historic mark

The Boston Red Sox continue their historic season. Wednesday’s 1-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays was the 100th victory of the season. Boston hadn’t done that in decades.

After being the first team to reach the post season on Tuesday, the Red Sox won the 146th game of the year for the 100th time. A real rarity for Boston, as they had at least 100 victories in 1946. But after the 104-50 season, they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games in the World Series.

They had also triumphed after their other two 100-victory seasons in 1912 and 1915.

“Somebody just told me that this was done three times before and that the last time was over 70 years ago,” said First Baseman Mitch Moreland: “I think it speaks for itself.”

The Red Sox needed the sixth least games this year to fill the 100. The quickest to do so, however, were the 1998 Yankees, who only needed 138 games and ended up winning the World Series.

However, only six victories remain before the Boston franchise record to break the previous record of 105 victories (1912) – a quite realistic goal with 16 games remaining.
