MLB: Novum in professional sport: Jerseys with Braille!

The Baltimore Orioles introduced themselves against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. For the first time, a professional sports team competed in shirts with Braille lettering.

Both the names on the back of the jerseys and the Orioles lettering on the chest were printed in Braille.

Fans at Oriole Park at Camden Yards also received Braille alphabet cards so they could read the names of their favorite players in this font.

The occasion for this special gesture was the 40th anniversary of the move of the National Federation for the Blind to Baltimore.

Bill Sciannella, a blind O’s season ticket holder, told MLB.com about the gesture and said: “My favorite part is when they hit a home run and everyone goes crazy.”

However, the action did not bring the Orioles luck, they lost the game 4:6 and thus cashed their 108th bankruptcy this season.
