MLB: Failure: Giants fire General Manager

The San Francisco Giants draw their first conclusions from this season’s failure: The team from the Bay Area relieved General Manager Bobby Evans of office on Monday.

However, Evans will remain with the team and will devote himself to other tasks in the future, as the team announced.

“I made the decision,” said CEO Larry Baer, adding, “At this point, we need a fresh approach to baseball operations.”

The Giants do not have a successor yet, the search has not yet started, but they already have a profile in mind: “We are looking for someone who – if you like – is the’Next-Gen-GM’,” said Baer.

Baer further specified his expectations: “People will call it’New School vs. Old School’, they will talk about’Analytics vs. Scouting’ and I think the new General Manager will be able to do both and bring both.

Evans joined the Giants in 1994 and was appointed Vice President of Baseball Operations in 2009. Until his promotion to GM 2015, he worked under his predecessor Brian Sabean, who has been Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations since then.

The Giants will end a season with a negative balance for the second time in a row in 2018 and have a balance of 166-224 since their last playoff in 2016.
