MLB: Baltimore clears up and fires GM/Manager

The Baltimore Orioles are cleaning up: After a season of 115 defeats, they are separating from Manager Buck Showalter and General Manager Dan Duquette.

Both contracts expire at the end of the World Series and will not be renewed. That’s what the O’s announced Wednesday. Showalter was in office since 2010, Duquette took over as GM after the 2011 season.

“The club has decided that my contract will not be renewed. And I think that’s probably the best,” Duquette said to the Baltimore Sun. “I appreciate the chance Peter Angelos gave me.”

The O’s indicated that they would engage a new strong man for their sporting leadership from outside. This new top official will ultimately also hire a new manager.

“We would like to thank Dan and Buck for their work over the last few years,” a team statement said. “Under their leadership, the club put competitive teams in series for over six years before the 2018 season, and they also played some important matches in September. They reached the postseason three times and were once only four games away from the World Series. And they won more matches in five of those six seasons than any other team in the American League.”
