NBA: Kyrie Irving to extend Boston Celtics contract next summer
Kyrie Irving wants to stay with Boston Celtics beyond the coming season and extend his contract next summer. He announced this to thunderous applause at a fan event at the TD Garden in Boston.
“I’ve already told my teammates, the whole team and everyone in Boston: If you want me back, I’ll sign a new contract here next summer,” Irving said about his future.
The only reason that prevents him from renewing his contract prematurely is that he has a financial background. The Point Guard can earn a total of around 80 million US dollars more if it signs a new contract in summer 2019 and waives an early extension of the current contract.
For Irving, the resulting rumours are no longer dramatic: “This is part of my job and it’s a big decision,” he said to the fans. “But I’ve been away from Cleveland for a year now, and I’m very comfortable in Boston now.”
Lately Irving has been accused of being interested in moving to the New York Knicks, where he might meet Jimmy Butler. However, this subject is now probably off the table for the time being.
