NBA: Cavs reach agreement with new head coach
Less than a week and a half after Head Coach Ty Lue’s dismissal, the Cleveland Cavaliers and his successor Larry Drew have agreed on a new contract. This was confirmed by the franchise on Monday.
Drew was initially reluctant to take over as a long-term interim coach unless he could get a salary increase or long-term security from the Cavaliers. Now both parties have apparently agreed on a contract.
According to Adrian Wojnarowksi of ESPN, Drew not only gets a job security for the current season, but also a partly guaranteed deal for the 2019/20 season.
“We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with Coach Drew so that he can continue to lead the team on the court,” said General Manager Koby Altman in a statement. “He brings important experience and many qualities that will help the team.”
The Cavaliers have had a catastrophic start to the season, with Lue fired after a 0-6 start on 28 October. Under Drew, the Cavs are now one win and two losses.
