MLB: Boston: New Deal for Master Makers

The Boston Red Sox are rewarding manager Alex Cora with a new contract and extension until the end of the 2021 season, when Cora had led his team as a rookie to win the World Series.

As ESPN speculates, the contract includes a significant salary increase and an extension of one year. His previous contract ran until 2020.

“We were consistently impressed with Alex,” said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner, adding, “His knowledge of the game, his ability to communicate with our players, and his incredible instincts and determination have led us to a historic master season. We know that we are in good hands and couldn’t be happier to know that he will be with us for the foreseeable future.”

Last year, Cora earned $800,000, which together with Brian Snitker of the Braves and Scott Servais of the Mariners was the lowest salary of any major league manager. That should change now.

The top earners among the managers in 2018 were Joe Maddon (Cubs), Bruce Bochy (Giants) and the now retired Mike Scioscia (Angels), who all earned six million dollars a year.
