Germany also lost their third game at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Denmark. However, against an overwhelming opponent from the USA, the DEB team held up well and gained self-confidence for the rest of the tournament despite their 3-0 defeat.
After three games, coach Marco Sturm’s team have only two points. In the fourth game on Wednesday, the DEB team must now win against South Korea in order not to lose their chances of reaching the quarter-finals (4.15 pm in the LIVETICKER and LIVE on DAZN).
Goals: 0:1 Patrick Kane (31st), 0:2 Derek Ryan (33rd), 0:3 Alex Debrincat (51st)
Penalties: 12 – 8
DEB coach Marco Sturm changed to the goalie position and brought Niklas Treutle for Timo Pielmeier right from the start. A move that already paid off in the first third. Treutle showed three very good and two sensational parades against strong US-Americans. Also the interaction with the German back team worked better than was still the case with Pielmeier in the first two games.
The DEB team did not play badly and in turn came up with top-class opportunities. Shortly before the first third break Yannic Seidenberg just missed a Draisaitl entry. In the second period, however, the USA benefited from a wrong decision by the referees, who gave Pietta a dubious penalty. In the majority, the favourite then struck twice (31./33.).
The USA’s lead was well deserved, but the DEB side did not take the lead after the second goal, only the goals did not want to fall. Ten minutes from the end of the match, Alex Debrincat finally put the lid on a game that was probably the DEB team’s strongest performance so far and which should have given Coach Sturm’s team plenty of self-confidence for the upcoming task against South Korea.
