EBEL: Vienna Capitals sign ex-NHL coach

The Vienna Capitals have taken a well-known coach from the North American professional league (NHL) to succeed Serge Aubin. The former ice hockey champion from Vienna presented Dave Cameron as the new head coach on Monday.

The 59-year-old Canadian held this position in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators from December 2014 until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Cameron also has many years of experience as an assistant coach in Ottawa and in the past season with the Calgary Flames.

“My job is not only to win games, but also to develop players. This aspect makes the job here at Vienna Capitals so exciting. With the Caps, I also have the chance to work with young players and coaches to develop talent for the professional team,” Cameron said in a club show.

He has experience with young players with the Canadian national team. Cameron, who had also played in the NHL (168 matches), was involved as assistant and head coach in three world championship titles of the U20 team of “Ahornblätter”. His son Connor was coach at Medveszak Zagreb last season.

Capitals President Hans Schmid was pleased about the commitment. “With Dave Cameron we have managed to engage a real top man from the best league in the world. This also shows that the Vienna Capitals are considered a first-class address in Europe,” said the club boss. “Dave will also give important impulses to our Silver-Capitals junior coaches and help them with his experience.”
