The 18th FIBA Basketball World Championship will take place in August and September 2019. In this article you can find out where the World Cup takes place, which teams participate, what the groups look like and much more.
Since 1950, the FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball) has organised a World Championship every four years. The 18th Basketball World Championship will take place in 2019.
The last World Cup to date took place in 2014, five years earlier. The background: FIBA deliberately postponed the rotation to the odd years in order to avoid the football World Cup, which is taking place almost simultaneously, and to attract more attention. After 2019, basketball fans will only have to wait four years for the next World Cup.
The FIBA Basketball World Championships 2019 will take place from 31 August to 15 September. The People’s Republic of China was designated as the host country in 2015. China prevailed against the Philippines.
The World Cup will take place in eight Chinese cities: Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
For the first time in the history of the World Basketball Championship, 32 teams will participate in the tournament. Five years ago there were 24 teams in Spain.
The 32 teams are divided into eight groups (A to H) with four teams each, each playing against the other once. The third and fourth place finishers compete against each other in placing games. The first two teams of each group reach the second round of the World Cup, in which there are four groups with four teams each (I to L).
For example, the first and second groups in groups A and B will meet in the second round in Group I. Once again, the two first-placed players in each group make it to the quarter-finals.
There the first of group I meets the second of group J and vice versa. The same applies to groups K and L.
Then there will be the semi-finals, a match for third place and the final on 15 September 2019.
A total of 80 teams from four regions will compete for a ticket to China in the World Cup qualifying round. Each of the four qualifying tournaments consists of two rounds.
In the end, twelve teams from Europe, seven from America, seven from Asia and five from Africa make it to the World Cup. Host China is already set.
Seven teams have already qualified for the 2019 World Cup in China – including the German national team. Coach Henrik Rödl’s team solved the World Cup ticket after the eighth victory in the eighth match of the World Cup Qualifier.
In addition to the German team and host China, five other national teams have already made it:
