Basketball: National player Giffey canceled for World Cup qualification

German national coach Henrik Rödl will have to play in the first two games of the newly introduced World Cup qualification on 24 January. and 27. Niels Giffey in November.

The forward suffered a ligament injury in his left thumb on Saturday during practice at his club Alba Berlin and was four to five weeks late. The second division of the Bundesliga announced this on Monday.

On Friday, Rödl had his 19-member line-up for the two matches against Georgia (24. November in Chemnitz) and in Austria (27. November). Whether the German Basketball Federation (DBB) nominates a replacement is not yet known.
