MLB: Chris Sale cracks 300-strikeout mark
Chris Sale won the Boston Red Sox at the Baltimore Orioles (9-0) on Wednesday at his 300th victory.Strikeout of the season arrived.This made him the first AL pitcher in 18 years to do so.
Sale needed 111 pitches to clear the 13th floor.Strikeout.Only with his last pitch of the evening in the eighth inning was it so far: A Called 3rd Strike was the 300th.Strikeout in the lefties season.
Manager John Farrell knew about the upcoming milestone and sent Sale back to the field, although the game had been decided long ago.Sale, however, was not aware of the situation:”I went out, did the last strikeout and everyone was playing crazy.I knew I was close, I didn’t know I only needed one more,”Sale admitted afterwards.He collected a total of 13 strikeouts in the game.
The last AL pitcher – and at the same time the last Red Sox pitcher – to break the 300 K mark was Pedro Martinez, who collected 313 strikes in 1999.This is the Red Sox franchise record to this day.
Chris Sale leads the MLB with 300 strikeouts, has a balance sheet of 17-7 and stands at 2.75 ERA.He is considered to be the favourite of the AL Cy Young Award this season.
