NHL: Penguins want to accept Trump’s invitation to the White House
Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins wants to accept the invitation to the White House despite the vehement protests from the sport against US President Donald Trump.This was announced in a statement by striker Tom Kühnhackl, current NHL champion, in a franchise.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins respect the office of president and the long tradition of master teams coming to the White House,” the franchise said,”any approval or rejection of the president’s policies can be shown by other means.
Trump therefore wrote on Sunday:”The NHL champion Pittsburgh Penguins is coming to the White House for the ceremony.A great team!”
Previously, he had launched a major attack on the sport at Twitter this weekend.The controversial president called on football fans to boycott NFL matches as long as the protests of the pros continue during the American anthem.The team owners had been asked by Trump to crack down on the protesting players and fire or suspend them.
Clubs and players reacted with a wave of protests on the NFL matchday.The Seattle Seahawks stayed in the cabin during the anthem.Numerous pros of other clubs knelt as they did last time when the “Star-Spangled Banner” was running.
NBA champion Stephen Curry had already uninvited Trump from the White House after the basketball star said he did not want to accept the obligatory invitation.
