Mackanin had taken over the managerial role at Phillies in June 2015.Under it, the franchise has won 172 games and lost 237 games after a painful rebuild had been initiated. The team has lost 95 games this season.

“It’s time to look ahead,”said General Manager Matt Klentak at Friday’s press conference,”This is the message today: it’s time to look ahead.”

Less than five months ago, the Phillies had extended the contract of 66-year-old Mackanin until 2018.Instead, from 2018 he is to take on the role of advisor to the General Manager. We are giving him a new role,”said Klentak,”we need a new role in the dugout and a new style. This has nothing to do with the fact that I don’t like Pete or am disappointed in him.”

Mackanin said he would have liked to come back as a manager,”Unfortunately it didn’t work out,” but he was happy to be able to stay in the organization.

According to Klentak, the front office will immediately start looking for a new manager,”We want to find a leader who can lead us into the future to achieve our goals.”
