NFL: Trubisky drama!
The Minnesota Vikings conclude Week 5 with an out-of-division win: Chicago Bears saw a wild success with storyline lines: Mitchell Trubisky’s debut had light and shade, but Chicago came to the end zone with some crazy placements, thus ensuring an exciting final phase.Meanwhile Sam Bradford was back at the Vikes – but only for a short time.
The quarterback returned after supposedly surviving knee injury.Bradford (5/11,36 YDS) seemed to be far away from 100 percent, rather he acted inaccurately and was not able to move in the pocket at all.He gave no chance at all to his own offense, but Minnesota finally managed to bring Case Keenum (17/21,140 YDS, TD) seconds ahead of the half-time break, which gave the team a completely different face.
But the eyes were primarily focused on the quarterback on the other side anyway: Mitchell Trubisky came to his first NFL start and made a very good impression.Trubisky (12/25,119 YDS, TD, INT) seemed to be more than comfortable in the offense and had some great passes early on, but made a few mistakes.A major problem on both sides, however, were punishments, including the deficits in Chicago’s receiving corps, which made life difficult for Trubisky.
It was a game with many, many flags and defenses, in which a safety of the Bears-Defense for Chicago’s first points and a bag fumble of the Vikings-Defense provided ultimate Minnesota’s first counters. This flow of play only changed with Keenum, who gave Minnesota’s offense a different face and directed a touchdown drive right after the halfway point – suddenly it was an explosive game: Chicago came in via fake-point touchdown, McKinnon established the old gap via 58-yard TD run.
And it got even crazier: Trubisky’s first NFL touchdown pass ended up in Miller’s arms with luck, and the Bears unpacked a crazy trick play during the 2-point conversion – equalization!Chicago even had the chance to win the game with a late game winning drive, but this was where the possible fairy tale debut story ended.Deep down in his own half, Trubisky threw an unforgivable interception, in return Minnesota ran down the clock and shot the Game Winner from 26 yards.
Chicago Bears (1-4) – Minnesota Vikings (3-2)17:20 (2:0,0:3,7:14,8:3) BOXSCORE
That Chicago doesn’t have a good wide-receiver corps is no secret and is also due to the injuries.Against Minnesota it was once again a blatant mismatch: Vikings-corner Xavier Rhodes was not tested once, Kendall Wright was with four receptions for 46 yards of Chicago’s productive wide receiver. No other wide receiver caught more than a passport, here will soon be a lot of work on Trubisky’s shoulders.
It was a promising debut – but in the end, Trubisky made the crucial mistake.A good two minutes before the end, Chicago’s defense had forced the punt, and Trubisky got the ball just before his own final zone.At First Down he had some time and went through his reads, but then ran out of his clean pocket and made a desperate decision: A later pass towards his tight end, which was covered by Harrison Smith. With the pick, Minnesota was right in Field Goal range.

For a long time, Minnesota had hardly any Run Game worth mentioning, and even though the offense with Keenum looked much better: McKinnon made the difference.Several explosive runs – including the 58-yard touchdown – kept Vikings drives alive, and Keenum increasingly sought the running back even in critical situations in passing games. The results were 95 rushing yards and 51 receiving yards (both the Vikings top scores) as well as a kind of Dalvin Cook Light role for McKinnon, which he could take even more frequently in the coming weeks. Its 47 snaps versus Murray 22 speak a clear language. Also strong: Leonard Floyd and Akiem Hicks on the Bears’ side, Everson Griffen on Minnesota.
Bradford’s injury was somewhat opaque, 100 percent still doesn’t seem to know how severe the knee problems were actually. After this game, you have to say: Bradford definitely came back too early. The otherwise so accurate register had considerable inaccuracies in his game from the very beginning, over- or undersubjecting receivers and was so big part of it that the Vikes finished the first quarter without first down and with -5 passing yards. He couldn’t move in his pocket at all and played more and more anxiously in the course of the game. The safety went completely on his head and later he had huge interception luck.It was the only right decision to change quarterback.
