Cycling: French cycling professional dies after accident with ambulance

The young French professional cyclist Mathieu Riebel (20) died in a collision with an ambulance during the New Caledonia tour. His team mate Erwan Brenterch (31) broke his leg in the accident. This was announced by the organizers on Friday.

The cause of the accident has not yet been clarified. One of the cyclists is said to have cut a curve. The tragedy took place on the first stage of the tour, in which 62 athletes took part.

“The race was stopped and I don’t know if we will continue it tomorrow,”said Gerard Salaun, President of the Regional Cycling Federation.
