MLB: Giants get Third Baseman Evan Longoria from Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays have given up their long-standing third baseman. The San Francisco Giants secure the services of Evan Longoria by handing in four players.

In return for Longoria, the Rays Third Baseman Christian Arroyo, the two minor league pitcher Matt Krook and Stephen Woods as well as Center Fielder Denard Span.

“Evan was one of the best third baseman at MLB and we are delighted to welcome him to our offices,” said Giants’ Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean.

The Giants take over Longoria’s contract with the Rays, which promises the infielder 100 million US dollars over the next six years.

“Evan is our biggest Ray,”said Tampa Bay’s owner Stuart Sternberg,”Evan has been the core of our success for over a decade, so it’s very emotional for all of us to leave. We wish him and his family the very best.”

Longoria played an average of. 261 last season with 20 home runs and 86 RBIs and recorded a WAR of 3.6. In 2008, the three-time All-Star was voted Rookie of the Year and has three Gold Gloves.
