Cycling: Algarve round trip: Degenkolb sprints to third place

The German professional cyclist John Degenkolb (Gera/Trek-Segafredo) missed another stage victory in the mass sprint at the Algarve round trip in Portugal.

The 29-year-old crossed the finish line in third place after 199.2 kilometres on the fourth section from Almodovar to Tavira in the success of the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo). Groenewegen had already won the first stage in the sprint.

Four-time World Time Trial World Champion Tony Martin (Cottbus/Katjuscha-Alpecin), who only finished sixth in his first round trip of the year on Friday in the race against the clock and was disappointing, crossed the finish line with the main field.

Before the final leg on Sunday, Briton Geraint Thomas (Sky) successfully defended the yellow jersey of the overall leader in front of his Polish team mate Michal Kwiatkowski.
