Olympia 2018: Team competition: No medal for Germany

For the first time since 2006, German ski racers have remained without a medal at the Olympic Winter Games.

At the Olympic premiere of the final team competition in Pyeongchang, Germany failed in the squad of Marina Wallner (Inzell), Alexander Schmid (Fischen), Lena Dürr (Germering) and Linus Straßer (Munich) in the quarter-finals because of Switzerland, who won the final against Austria (3:1) and won gold. Bronze went to Norway.

“Each of us has driven very well. That’s how you can drop out,”said Straßer at Eurosport. Dürr added:”It is a pity that it is already over. I might have gone a little bit further in the second run. Now it’s fifth place, but we were hoping for more.”

In the first round Dürr and Straßer had secured Germany a victory against Slovakia (2:2) due to the better time. The Germans lost 2-2 against Switzerland by 0.40 seconds over the time schedule,”said DSV Alpine Director Wolfgang Maier.

The best results of the German alpine skiers in Pyeongchang were fourth place for Viktoria Rebensburg (Kreuth) in the giant slalom and fifth place for Thomas Dreßen (Mittenwald) in the downhill run.”This is not funny for us. We also wanted to bring our share for the’ Team D’ for the medal table. However, I still believe that the staff above the Alpine Group does not have to be broken. When you see the conditions under which we drove here, you have to say fairly that it was extremely difficult to collect the medals here,”said Maier.

Four years ago in Sochi, Maria-Höfl Riesch had won gold and silver in the combination as well as in the Super-G, Rebensburg bronze in giant slalom.
