Cycling: Heavy accident overshadows track cycling World Championship
The track cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, were overshadowed by a serious accident on Friday afternoon.
A referee of the World Cycling Federation UCI collided with a female cyclist during the Scratch race during the women’s émnium and was then admitted to hospital with head injuries. The competitions were then interrupted for 45 minutes.
After a crash, UCI official Andrew McCord from the USA wanted to pick up a visor lying on the track and collided with Hong Kong driver Xiaojuan Diao, who was travelling at about 50 kilometers per hour. McCord was treated on the track for about 15 minutes and then unconsciously and was carried away with a stretcher, bleeding at the head. Xiaojuan was taken out of the hall in a wheelchair.
