Golf: Reed wins in Augusta: “Great fucking job”

Patrick Reed won the US Masters in Augusta and celebrated his first major triumph ever. The American prevailed over his compatriots Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth on Magnolia Lane.

Reed returned to the clubhouse after the last lap on the par 72 course with a 71. The 27-year-old needed a total of 273 strokes (69+66+67+71), one less than Fowler, who finished at 67.

Unbelievably, Spieth trumped on the final day. The Augusta Champion of 2015 played a 64 and thus the best round of the entire tournament. In the end, he needed a total of 275 strokes. Nordire Rory McIlroy, who had been in second place before the final day, slipped to a split fifth place with a 74.

“Great fucking job,” it blew out of Reed’s Caddie Kessler Karain. And Reed himself said: “It felt good that I had to play par at the last hole to win my first major. “It’s never easy to win a tournament like this.”

Meanwhile, the German-speaking representatives had little to do with the top placings. The Austrian Bernd Wiesberger (287) finished in 24th place.

Best German was Oldie Bernhard Langer (291) in 38th place. Martin Kaymer finished 48th after 73 with a total of 294 strokes, “I left a lot on the greens. I’m glad I don’t have to come back for twelve months now,” Kaymer said.

Tiger Woods finished the first major of the year on the shared 32nd place. The superstar played his best round on the last day with a 69. A highlight was provided by Charley Hoffman. The American recorded a hole-in-one on the 16th.
