MLB: League postpones Yankees game in Canada again

Breathe a sigh of relief for the New York Yankees: The Bronx Bombers don’t have to play three games within 24 hours of July 8-9. The MLB announced on Tuesday that New York’s guest appearance in Toronto will not take place on Sunday evening.

Earlier this week, the US cable station ESPN had chosen the Blue Jays’ encounter with the Yankees for the Sunday Night Game on July 8, even though the Yankees had already agreed on a double header with the Baltimore Orioles on July 9 to catch up on matches that had been cancelled due to the weather.

That would have meant the Yankees playing three games in two cities in 24 hours. The Yankees complained to the League, which declared in the person of Commissioner Rob Manfred, to find a solution to the situation.

It now looks like the game in Canada will take place as originally planned at 1pm local time, while the game between the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers in Anaheim will be the Sunday Night Game.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed “excitement” and “gratitude” about the renewed change of the programme after the ex-ESPN expert had vented his anger about the situation on Monday.

The Yankees have already had seven games this season cancelled or interrupted due to the weather. Last Monday they therefore already contested a double header at the Detroit Tigers.
