NBA: SL: Wagner trumps, Bonga can make her debut
Both Germans are used for the Los Angeles Lakers in Las Vegas, but Moritz Wagner presents himself much further than Isaac Bonga. Deandre Ayton wins the duel against a battered Marvin Bagley, while Trae Young finally swims free with a double-double.
That was the second day of the Summer League in Las Vegas.
Points: Tony Bradley, Georges Niang, Grayson Allen (16 each) – Wade Baldwin IV (20)
Rebounds: Malcolm Hill (7) – Caleb Swanigan (13)
Assists: Grayson Allen, Thomas Wilder (5 each) – Wade Baldwin IV (5)
Portland started the game with five NBA-experienced players and, thanks to Wade Baldwin, was clearly superior at first. But also Caleb Swanigan (11, 13 rebounds), last year’s first-round pick of the Blazers, and second-round pick Gary Trent Jr. (16) could attract attention. The No.10 pick from 2017, Zach Collins (5, 2/12 FG), who ran into the mask, remained rather inconspicuous in his 28 minutes.
Utah only kept up a bit in the second quarter, because there No.21 pick Grayson Allen had his best phase and met some threesomes. The ex-Dukie scored 16 points (6/17 FG) and 5 assists. The Jazz came a little closer again towards the end, but the outstanding Baldwin first completed a spectacular dunk, followed shortly afterwards by a threesome – the preliminary round four minutes before the end. Jake Layman and first-round pick Anfernee Simons also provided real Highlight Plays shortly afterwards.
But Baldwin broke his strong performance shortly before the end when he got ejected after a fight with Allen.
Points: T.J. Leaf (17) – Derrick White (19)
Rebounds: Alize Johnson (9) – Jaron Blossomgame (10)
Assists: Aaron Holiday (7) – Derrick White (5)
The No.23 pick Aaron Holiday also convinced in his second game. Although the throw did not want to fall (10 points, 3/15 FG), the third Holiday-Brother used his teammates well with 7 Assists and also grabbed 7 boards. Second-round pick Alize Johnson (10, 9 rebounds) also attracted attention with a lot of Hustle. T.J. Leaf, who threw one ticket after the other the day before, won this time with 17 points.
The first-round pick of the Spurs, Lonnie Walker, like Holiday, had little Fortune with his throw, but with 15 points (6/18 FG) he still indicated his potential several times. The same was true for Derrick White (19, 6/18 FG, 5 Rebounds, 5 Assists), who continued to promote himself.
Points: Trevon Bluiett (26) – Duncan Robinson (18)
Rebounds: Cheick Diallo (9) – Jarrod Jones (12)
Assists: Walter Lemon Jr. (9) – Matt Farrell (6)
It was a clear matter, and actually already from the second quarter. As the day before, the Pelicans were quite dominant against the Raptors and this was not least due to former Xavier player Trevon Bluiett, whose name was not called at the draft, but who attracted attention in this game with 26 points (10/14 FG, 6/10 3FG) in only 21 minutes from the bank.
Walter Lemon Jr., who made his NBA debut last season for the Pels, also showed a very good performance with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists, while second round pick Tony Carr acted rather inconspicuously with 9 points. Duncan Robinson (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Jarrod Jones (15, 12) stood out positively among the Heat, who had no draft pick this summer.
Points: John Collins (30) – Kevin Knox (22)
Rebounds: Tyler Dorsey (14) – Kevin Knox, Damyean Dotson, Mitchell Robinson (8)
Assists: Trae Young (11) – Frank Ntilikina (5)
Even though they lost, the Hawks may have enjoyed the game. After his sometimes somewhat worrying appearances in the Utah Summer League, Trae Young showed that things could be quite different: The No.5 pick scored 21 points (4/12 FG, 3/9 3FG, 10/12 FT), but even more important were the 11 assists with only 3 ball losses, which he delivered in this game. Especially as he had to complete many of his minutes against the strong defender Frank Ntilikina.
Young’s playmaking helped the Hawks to a well worth seeing performance in the offense, in which especially sophomore John Collins with 30 points and 8 rebounds (4/7 3FG) really played out. Tyler Dorsey also performed very well with 15 points and 14 rebounds, although he was a bit too greedy from downtown (2/10 3FG).
The Knicks also enjoyed their lottery pick. Kevin Knox, still booed in the draft, indicated his potential with 22 points and 8 rebounds, second-round pick Mitchell Robinson played 9, 8 and 4 blocks. Troy Williams (17), Allonzo Trier (15) and Damyean Dotson (13) also contributed to the narrow victory for the New Yorkers.
