The Open Championship is the oldest of the four major tournaments in professional golf. The golf tournament was held for the first time in 1860. Until 1894, the tournament was played exclusively in Scotland. Later England and Northern Ireland were added as venues. It is the only major tournament to be held in Europe.

The word “Open” means that all golfers can qualify for the tournament, whether professional or amateur. Provided he has a plus handicap, i.e. he can play better than par.
