Alex Smith’s trade with the Washington Redskins has provided clarity in the capital’s quarterback position. Kirk Cousins will run for another team next season. Now, Cousins has talked about how he has received the customer and how he will continue to do so.
“It came as a surprise,”Cousins told ESPN Friday. The 29-year-old had just finished a workout at a hotel in Minneapolis when he read the text message on his mobile phone:”I hadn’t heard anything about it and I didn’t even notice. But I know how fast such things can happen in this league. Now I’m expecting the 14th. March to become a Free Agent.”
The Redskins had found a solution in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs due to negotiations with cousins that had not progressed for years. Smith’s in a deal that took place on the 14th. Cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third round pick.
“I knew that a tough decision was waiting for me when I joined the Free Agency,”continued Cousins,”the decision now gives me clarity. Of course, it was a difficult moment because of all the memories that connect me to the city.”
Cousins, a four-round pick of the 2012 drafts, started the last three years for the capital’s franchise. In each of these seasons he was able to throw for over 4,000 yards and was hoping for a big payday. The last two years the parties could not agree on a long term deal and so the Redskins kept their cousins under the franchise day. But another day was no longer under discussion for Washington.
“Coach Gruden called me the next day and told me that my wish to postpone the negotiations until March put them in a difficult position”, continued Cousins,”You couldn’t afford it and therefore had to make a decision. You tried to make me a deal, but I’m still waiting. That is why they have carried out the trade and I understand that. He told me that he wished me the best and is looking forward to seeing me again in the future.”
