Ski superstar Marcel Hirscher received his first Olympic gold medal on Tuesday. At the award ceremony for his success hours before in the alpine combination of the Pyeongchang Winter Games, he was presented with the coveted piece at the Medal Plaza in the Olympic Park by Willi Kaltschmitt Lujan, a member of the IOC Executive Committee from Guatemala.
ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel was also officially present at the celebration as a member of the FIS Council and thus observes a smiling, relaxed Hirscher at close quarters. With an even more powerful air jump than two days before, Olympic luge champion David Gleirscher jumped the 28-year-old onto the podium, with a fitting jubilant “Saucool, that this has now worked. Right at the first chance. Indescribable,”Hirscher said in his first interview after the ceremony.
With the few spectators in the finish area and at the race, we are not so aware of the whole thing:”You can’t realize that this is the Olympics,”explained the Annaberger. At the award ceremony he discovered a flag among the spectators, away from his colleagues from the ÖOC team. And the six-time world champion and overall World Cup winner also appreciated it:”It’s great to take it so far from home and come here.”
Hirscher emphasized once again that he was particularly satisfied with his downhill performance:”There was also a lot of overcoming and unconditional willingness. Hirscher took a quick look at the medal on the podium and said,” It’s not that easy, it’s half a kilo. The ideal value is of course immeasurably high.”
Hirscher said that he would have liked to march in with leather trousers for the award ceremony, but he didn’t have any.”This is the only one that didn’t work out”, but if it was forwarded to him, he would put them on for a possible further participation in an award ceremony in Pyeongchang.
