Olympia 2018: Hayböck falls back, Stoch takes gold

Again there was no medal for Austria’s ski jumper from the Großschanze. On Saturday, Michael Hayböck dropped from second place to sixth in the second round. As four years ago in Sochi, gold was secured by Kamil Stoch from the pole before Andreas Wellinger, who had won from the normal hill. The Norwegian Robert Johansson won the bronze medal.

Hayböck had put himself in a good starting position in the first round with a distance of 140 metres, but was unable to compete for the medals in the second round with 131 metres. Stoch finished his half-time lead 3.4 points ahead of Wellinger. Johansson benefited from Hayböck’s relapse and slipped from fourth to third place, right in front of his team-mates Daniel Andre Tande and Johann Andre Forfang.

As the second Austrian in the final, Stefan Kraft finished 18th.
