MLB: Boston Red Sox must continue on to newcomer J. D.

Even a few days after the Boston Red Sox met with Free Agent J. D. Martinez on a five-year contract worth 110 million dollars, the deal is still not official. Apparently, the medical check-up is delaying the further procedure. Manager Alex Cora is relaxed, however.

The media already reported at the beginning of the week that the agreement was not denied by Red Sox, but the contract is not yet official, the ink is not dry yet. The outfielder already had his medical check-up on Wednesday, but apparently the Red Sox doctors have not yet finished checking the test results.

According to media reports, one of the main concerns is to have specialists assess whether Martinez’s injuries, which he had sustained during the past two seasons, represented a particular risk. In 2016 Martinez had an injury to the right elbow, and in 2017 he suffered a compression of the Lisfranc ligament in the right foot.

Furthermore, the fact that large parts of the Red Sox medical staff are in Boston, while the team in Fort Myers/Florida for the jumping training, is supposed to complicate the story. The medical check-up took place on Wednesday in Fort Myers, but it is not clear whether Martinez is currently there. There is speculation that due to the extended waiting period, he has returned to his home town of Miami for the time being.

“I have no idea,”Cora said when asked where Martinez is at the moment. The manager, however, was relaxed about the situation regarding the outfielder,”I’m not worried. What I can do is my thing. My job here is to be there every day and get the boys ready for the season.”

In the meantime, the wait for the new Arizona Diamondbacks to join us continues.
