Olympia 2018: ÖOC draws largely satisfied balance to Olympia in Pyeongchang

Before the XXIII. ÖOC President Karl Stoss and ÖOC Secretary-General Peter Mennel summed up the first results of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. And this is largely satisfactory.

Before the final day Austria holds 14 medals – 5 x gold, 3 x silver, 6 x bronze – and takes ninth place in the medal table among 93 nations. The ÖOC team is thus, among other things, in charge of in front of hosts South Korea (4/5/4/13), Japan (3/5/3/11), Italy (3/2/5/10), the Olympic athletes of Russia/OAR (1/6/9/16), China (1/6/2/9) and Poland (1/0/1/2).

“We have won more gold medals than in Sochi, we are also close to Sochi in the overall calculation of all medals. We are really satisfied”, emphasizes ÖOC President Karl Stoss,”We cannot be satisfied with the ski jumpers. And the course of the ski and snowboardcrossers and snowboarders respectively. The regulations themselves are worthy of criticism – it certainly cannot go on like this. This has to be looked at in detail,”adds ÖOC Vice President Peter Schröcksnadel.

ÖOC chief of mission Christoph Sieber says:”The sports facilities were all very good. The organisation worked smoothly. The only criticism: As in Sochi, emergency medical care at the competition sites was inadequate. There must be a solution for Tokyo and Beijing!”

In total, Austria has so far achieved 48 top ten places (including medals). No less than 7 times instead of precious metal with rank 4 there was only “sheet metal”.

The most successful Austrian is Marcel Hirscher with 2 gold medals (Alpine combination, giant slalom). Also 2 medals conquered: David Gleirscher (1 x gold – tobogganing, single-seater, 1 x bronze – team competition), Katharina Gallhuber (1 x silver – alpine team competition, 1 x bronze, slalom), Michael Matt (1 x silver – alpine team competition, 1 x bronze, slalom), Peter Penz/Georg Fischler (1 x silver – tobogganing, doubles, 1 x bronze)

The Austria House counted 12,000 guests so far:”Once again we were among the absolute hotspots, the pictures of our medal celebrations and the Snow Volleyball exhibition went around the world,”Peter Mennel concludes with more than satisfied results.

A total of 28,800 meals were served over the 18 days – including 5,400 Kaiserschmarren, 3,600 schnitzel, 3,000 portions of platter snacks, 1,200 steaks. 13,000 liters of mineral water were consumed, 120,000 pieces of pastry, 3 tons of bread, 12,000 pieces of cake, 12,000 pieces of corn lace and 6,000 portions of apple strudel.
