During the All-Star Weekend 2018, the film company Lionsgate released a trailer for the film “Uncle Drew (Movie)”, which is intended to bring the legendary advertising figure embodied by NBA superstar Kyrie Irving to the cinema screen. Already in the coming summer it’s time – and next to Irving some other ex-stars from the NBA will be playing in the film.
The film will be released in the USA on Friday, 29. June 2018 in the cinemas all over the country.
Uncle Drew is a character played by Kyrie Irving, who appeared for the first time in a Pepsi commercial in 2013. Irving dressed up as an old man called Uncle Drew and drove in this disguise to a free place. There he asked some young players to be allowed to play with them.
At first Irving played like an old man in his disguise, but during the course of the game he unpacked his real skills and declassified the young players according to all the rules of the art. The figure “Uncle Drew” attained cult status within a very short time, Irving still carries this nickname to this day. Some of the slogans from the advertising clip such as “Too easy out here against these young bloods” are often quoted to this day.
After Uncle Drew was successful in other commercials, he now gets his own movie. This is about the Rucker Classic Streetball Tournament in Harlem, which Dax (played by Lil Rel Howery) desperately wants to win. For this purpose he calls Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving) and convinces him to lace up his sneakers again and join the tournament together with his crew.
This crew includes several renowned former NBA and WNBA stars such as Shaquille O’ Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and Lisa Leslie. In addition,”professional” actors such as Nick Kroll will also be present. The director is Charles Stone III, who has already made films like “Drumline”,”Lila & Eve” and “Die Strassen Harlems”.
This has not yet been officially announced – but it is likely that the film will be shown in some cinemas in Germany, at least in the original voice output.
