Since 1985, the Homerun Derby has been an integral part of the All-Star Week on the eve of the All-Star Games. In the Derby, eight MLB players compete against each other and try to hit as many balls as possible on the stands of the respective ball park within a given time.
The MLB Homerun Derby 2018 and the All-Star Game 2018 will take place at the Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
The Homerun Derby 2018 takes place on 16. July at 8 pm East Coast time (17. July, 2 o’ clock CEST), almost exactly 24 hours before the beginning of the 89. All-Star Games, held.
The Homerun Derby will be broadcast in Germany by the pay-TV channel Sport1US. There will also be a paid live stream at MLB. TV, the official streaming provider of Major League Baseball.
According to the current rules, there are eight participants in the Homerun Derby, four per league. The MLB, in cooperation with the players’ union MLBPA, determines the participants and determines the seed list on the basis of the current homerun figures and performances of the past years.
One name, however, is quite certain to be mentioned: Bryce Harper, the superstar of the Washington Nationals, had already announced last year that he would be taking part in front of the home crowd.
In contrast to the All-Star Game, in which each player wears the uniform of his or her own MLB team, there are special batting practice uniforms for the Homerun Derby, which are worn during the derby as well as the batting training. The design is usually based on the respective franchise and differs in the American and National League.
The Homerun Derby was won by Aaron Judge von den Yankees in the final 11:10 against Miguel Sano. Judge beat 47 home runs in the competition, including four homeruns that flew more than 600 feet.
