German national ice hockey player Philipp Grubauer has regained the lead in the Metropolitan Division of the North American professional league NHL with the Washington Capitals. The celebrated hero in the 3:2 victory after extra time against Winnipeg Jets was Alexander Ovetschkin.
The Russian exceptional talent scored in his 900th birthday. NHL game scored his NHL goals 599 and 600 and thus reached another milestone in his career. After the NHL legends Wayne Gretzky (718 games), Mario Lemieux (719) and Brett Hull (900), the 32-year-old advanced to the fourth player to reach the 600-goal mark in less than 1000 games. In total, Ovetschkin is the 20th. NHL pro with at least 600 goals.
Grubauer stood on the ice for the entire season and scored 23 out of 25 shots on his goal. The winning goal was marked by Ovetschkin’s compatriot Yevgeny Kuznetsov in the fifth minute of extra time.
In the standings, the Caps lead 85 points, just ahead of defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins (82) with German international Tom Kühnhackl and Philadelphia Flyers (81) who were defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights 2-3. Washington has also lost one game less than the two pursuers.
