The New York Jets are investing heavily in the quarterback position this year: Josh McCown was held, Gang Green was already trading dearly upwards in the draft – and Teddy Bridgewater was also hired. The latter is still a complete wildcard due to his serious knee injury two years ago, but the former Vikings quarterback was not exactly optimistic in his first conversation with media representatives after the change.
On Wednesday Bridgewater had its first conference call with the media after the signing in New York. Naturally, questions arose as to how close his knee was to the 100 percent and whether he could participate in the off-season workouts. The 26-year-old was extremely cautious.
“This is something that makes me uncomfortable to talk about now,” quotes ESPN Bridgewater, who added: “I am sure there will be talks with the coaching staff and then we will develop a plan.
Bridgewater had joined the Free Agency with the goal of having a real chance as a starter. This could be difficult in New York, given that McCown has returned and that a rookie quarterback is expected to arrive with the third pick in the draft. Bridgewater’s contract only runs for the 2018 season and is guaranteed to earn him only one million dollars, several more millions are possible through bonus payments.
This deal suggests that Bridgewater did not have a very large market – teams are probably still deterred by the serious knee injury he suffered shortly before the start of the 2016 season.
Nevertheless, he also stressed on Wednesday: “I have great confidence in my skills and in the coaching and coaching staff here. I trust they can take me back to the level I once had. and the only way to get better is to work hard now.”
