MLB: Media: New York Yankees promote Top-Prospect Gleyber Torres

The New York Yankees plan to move their top prospect Gleyber Torres out of the AAA League into the MLB, according to media reports. The 21-year-old Infielder was taken from the field on Saturday by Bobby Mitchell, manager of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRaiders, after six innings. It wasn’t until after the game that he informed Torres of the upcoming promotion to the Yankees.

“I’m super happy, a dream comes true for me,” Torres from the Times Tribune is quoted. The Venezuelan contacted his parents after the match and hopes to see them in New York on Sunday for the match against Toronto Blue Jays.

The Yankees took their time with the personnel rochade. The deadline for major league seasons has passed and Torres will now be under contract with the Yankees for another season. The youngster will not be available to the free agency market until 2024.

“Last year was tough for me,” said Torres, who was set back by injuries. “Now I can’t wait for my first game.”

Torres could help the Yankees, who have so far stumbled in the defense, as early as Sunday. The Pinstripes are leading the American League with 18 errors so far.

While Tyler Wade secured his place as Second Baseman after the jumping training, he has only been in action for the last nine days. His performance on the plate (3 for 35) was below expectations, which is why Torres could take his place in the Yankees’ lineup.

In addition, Third Baseman Brandon Drury had to take a break with persistent migraine for the last two weeks. Miguel Andujar jumped in for Drury, but Torres has been in this position in the Minor League for the past few days.

Torres joined the Chicago Cubs in 2013 as a 16-year-old. In the summer of 2016, the Cubs traded him to New York with Aroldis Chapman.
