MLB: First World Series Ring of Chicago Cubs to be auctioned off

The Chicago Cubs are likely to have a rather unsentimental employee in their ranks. After less than a year, the first ring that the champions had been presented with to win the World Series was abandoned for auction. The starting bid is $1,908, and the ring could even change hands for considerably less.

As the Chicago Sun-Times reports, a Cubbies scout who wants to remain anonymous has released his ring for auction. At the latest after the auction, the identity of the seller will be established: The name is engraved in the ring.

Although the starting bid is just under 2,000, experts estimate the ring’s value to be between 50,000 and 250,000 dollars.

But the seller could get even less.Because the Chicago Cubs knew that this day would come sooner or later, when one of the rings would be offered in the secondary market, they have the privilege to retain any rings lent to the staff to buy back a single dollar.

“We have seen that this is very common in other teams. We hope that people will treat the ring with respect, and not just as a saleable asset,”said press spokesman Julian Green in April.

The ring is set with 214 diamonds weighing 5.5 carats.Three carats are made of ruby, and form the Chicago Cubs logo.
