MLB: Detroit star doesn’t want to play anymore

Miguel Cabrera doesn’t want to play anymore. The First Baseman of the Detroit Tigers explained his attitude with what he saw as an unfair public reaction to this type of operation.

Cabrera is currently on the Disabled List with an injury to the large hamstring. It could have been reactivated on Monday, but back and hip pain delays its return.

Asked about it, Cabrera told mlive.com: “I did it last year and I don’t want to do it again this year.” Cabrera continued: “Nobody appreciates playing despite injury, so I’ll take my time and only play again when I’m well. I played injured in Detroit in a few years. And people don’t appreciate it.”

The now 35-year-old repeatedly suffered back injuries last year, beating just.249 (career low) with 16 home runs and 60 RBI (career low) in 130 games.

“If you play badly, people will destroy you. They’re destroying you. They say you’re bad, that you should go home, that you deserve nothing and that you’re old. So I say, “OK, I won’t play hurt anymore.” Now I’m taking my time.”

Cabrera is in the third year of an eight-year contract worth 248 million dollars. The deal runs until he’s 40. The eleven-time All-Star started the season well, beating 3 home runs and 21 RBI in his 26 games to date, .323.

When the Triple Crown winner of 2012 will return to the team is still open. Manager Ron Gardenhire hopes, however, that Cabrera can start baseball activities this week.
