MLB: Austin Pruitt makes history by winning Tampa Bay Ray

Austin Pruitt wrote Ray’s story on Sunday in service of Tampa Bay. The Relief Pitcher pitched 5 2/3 innings and won the Save in the 8:3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. It was the first save for at least five innings in more than 15 years.

“I had a save last year that went over three innings, but 5 2/3 are really long,” said Pruitt, who had started eight games for Tampa Bay last year.

Before that the relief artist Sergio Romo had started once more, but only managed one out (2 H, 3 ER, BB) until his replacement. Then left-handed Vidal Nuno came into play and won with three shutout innings.

The last pitcher to win a save in the regular season with at least five innings was Joaquin Benoit, who even pitched seven innings for the Texas Rangers against the Baltimore Orioles in September 2002.

The last time a pitcher managed anything like that was in the 2014 World Series, when Madison Bumgarner was substituted for the San Francisco Giants against the Kansas City Royals in Game 7 and completed the triumph for his team.
