MLB: Minnesota Twins trades Phil Hughes and Draftpick to San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have signed Starting Pitcher Phil Hughes of the Minnesota Twins per Trade. They also received cash and an extra draft pick. In return the team of Max Kepler gets Minor-League-Catcher Janigson Villalobos.

The Twins had Hughes designated for assignment on Monday and then had seven days to either release him or trade him. Finally, a trade partner was found in San Diego, who had to sweeten this deal with 14.5 million dollars in cash plus the 74th pick in the draft.

The pick is a competitive balance pick, the only type of draft pick that can be traded in the MLB. The 14.5 million dollars in turn cover most of Hughes’ due salary. The right-hander earns 13.2 million dollars a year in both 2018 and 2019.

Hughes, who has a 6.75 ERA over twelve innings this season, will initially be used as a relief. “I had a short chat with him today. He’ll get the ball in the bullpen. He will initially have short assignments and then his performance will decide what opportunities he will receive later,” said Padres manager Andy Green on Sunday.

Over five years in Minnesota, Hughes was 32-29 with a 4.43 ERA, but was repeatedly thrown off course by numerous operations. He was last operated on for a shoulder girdle compression syndrome and was out for months.
