MLB: Shootout! USA outdoes World

Team USA won a brilliant All-Star Futures Game with 10:6 against Team World in Washington/D.C.. Both junior teams beat eight home runs together in Nationals Park.

The MLB Homerun Derby actually only starts on Tuesday night (2am), but the spectators in the American capital got a foretaste of what the upcoming performance on Monday evening (local time) will look like. The ball was literally flying towards the stands early in the game. In the second inning Seuly Matias hit a home run for the World Team and opened the laser show.

Outfielder Yusniel Diaz of the Los Angeles Dodgers was in a particularly good mood. He hit two home runs (3 RBI).

In the middle of the seventh inning, it was 6-6 after Diaz’s second long ball, but Team USA finally took over the command. A wild pitch by pitcher Adonis Medina took the lead 7:6 before First Baseman Peter Alonso (New York Mets) took a remarkable 414-foot Homun deep into the stands in Left Field. Finally, Jo Adell concluded with his Sacrifice Fly.

Thereupon Taylor Trammell of the Cincinnati Reds scored his second run in the game and saved himself from even more ridicule than he already had. Background: Having beaten a Homer in the sixth inning, Trammell thought he had finished second in the eighth.

He wore a microphone and the viewers on TV heard him say “This is the second”, only to trot to first base and realize that the ball only hit the wall in the right field. Trammell started to sprint, but had to be content with a triple – and a certain embarrassment. At the Dugout, he just said, “My mother’s gonna kill me.”

But after this odyssey Trammell was doubly happy, because not only did Team USA win the game, Trammell was also voted MVP.

The teams were managed by the two ex-stars David Ortiz (Team World) and Torii Hunter (Team USA), who obviously had fun at work.
