MLB: Chicago sets historic record

Chicago Cubs set an all-time record on Friday. They were the first team since 1969 to make seven double plays in one game.

“That’s a solid number,” said manager Joe Maddon after the 1-0 win over Pittsburgh Pirates: “It’s not something you see every day. I can’t remember anything like it.”

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Cubs are only the third team to make seven double plays in one game. Previously, only the New York Yankees succeeded in doing so in 1942 and the Houston Astros in 1969.

The Cubs had six ground ball double plays against Pittsburgh and one after a line drive. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels introduced five of them and has now already provided for 21 this season, which is the best career value for him.

“It is surprising how many we have received,” Hamels told reporters: “You really are the pitcher’s best friend.”
