Klay Thompson will be a free agent in the summer of 2019 and many teams are hoping to free the Shooting Guard from the Golden State Warriors. However, he has now again emphasized to the Bay Area News Group that he sees himself further in the Bay Area.
“I would like to be a warrior for life,” Thompson said. “Treaty negotiations are still a long way off, but I think we all have the same interests. I’d love to spend the rest of my career here.”
Thompson currently has the opportunity to extend his contract, which expires after next season, but he could potentially earn more money as a free agent in 2019. “It’s hard to say,” said the 28-year-old when asked if he would like to sign a new deal right now.
“I’d definitely be interested. But at the end of the day, it looks like I’ll be a free agent next year. Number one on my list, of course, would be to stay with the Warriors.” Thompson will make nearly $19 million next season.
At the same time, the All-Star also said that one could never have certainty: “I know it’s a business. That’s why I am simply grateful for the seven years I’ve had here. And I know that the eighth year will probably be even better. We’ll be hungry again. It was an incredible offseason.”
Thompson is pleased to welcome new member DeMarcus Cousins, who signed as free agent for 1 year and 5.3 million dollars with the Warriors and gives them a fifth All-Star. As far as his own free agency was concerned, however, he was relaxed.
“This will always be a topic of conversation. NBA Free Agency is now like a season in itself, with all the media attention and player changes,” Thompson said. “Fans love to dream that their team could be the next super team.”
